Terry McCaleb is a former FBI agent. His assignment in the LA area had been to serve as "point man" for communications with the media when a serial killer case was under investigation. Eventually the physical and emotional strain of his assignments caught up with him, and his heart muscle began to fail. A long wait for a heart transplant finally culminated in the risky operation, and McCaleb has retired to a sailboat in San Pedro harbor. A woman visits his boat one day. She has come to ask him to investigate the death of her sister, drawn to visit him by an interview which recently appeared in a local newspaper. Against his doctor's advice, McCaleb agrees to help locate the murderer.

This is an extremely intricate plot, following a trail which very very gradually unfolds to point McCaleb toward the truth. The reader has no idea in early chapters where the story will lead. Yet even though several twists in the plot might strain credulity, Connelly makes everything work.
