"There is no end of things in the heart." Harry Bosch returns; slightly care-worn, and without the shield that has been such a part of his identity for so long. Having retired from LAPD, Harry has started getting bored and needs something to do. A phone call from an old working acquaintance brings up a case Harry has never forgotten - an armored car robbery on a movie set and a killing from the sack of unsolved-case files he carried home on his last night with LAPD.

But things have changed for Harry. He doesn't have a badge to open doors any more. But Harry is still Harry, and he keeps pushing back. "Someone has to stand for the dead" and this girl in particular got to him a long time ago. And somewhere, someone in the background with a great deal of clout, is trying to keep Harry from the truth.

When you need a thriller, dark and powerful, choose Michael Connelly. He combines classic investigation with intricate plot twists and insightful characterizations that can have you sitting on the edge of your seat and reading late into the night. I've lost many a nights' sleep to one of Mr. Connelly's books and this one is the best yet. It makes more than one clear, powerful statement and reminds us that the laws are for all - not just a chose few.
