Bad Men is a departure for John Connolly. Maine is here and so too is Charlie Parker in a brief cameo. Bad Men is not a “crime” novel though. Instead Connolly has presented us with literary folklore done on a grand scale.

Maine is country where anything is possible and history runs as deep as the ocean. It’s past is a violent one. And the people are determined. To be a native of this unforgiving country is to know your priorities and to know a connection to the environment not present in any other state in the U.S. It is God’s country, book of Job style. At the beginning of the third millennium it has been captured to a tee by an Irishman with an amazing gift for writing. Bad Men is a modern tale. On the small island of Sanctuary lives a woman and her son. They are outsiders but becoming part of the small community.

The tides are shifting though. As their past comes closer to catching up with them, it seems that Sanctuary’s past is also surfacing. Standing between good and evil is the Sentinel Joe Dupree. An affable giant, Joe’s heart may just rescue this tiny community or are the Bad Men here to stay?

I cannot recommend this book highly enough to my fellow mystery fans. My hope is that Mr. Connolly felt as refreshed after writing it as I did after reading it.
