When you look at the cover of “Delen Close”, you see the gold bar, the face in shadows, the smoke and the swastika. If you’re me, you immediately think it’s a WWII mystery and keep moving down the aisle. Unless you’re a Book Reviewer for Books’n’bytes.com. Then you get a better synopsis of the book without ever seeing the cover. Plus I had already read George Crosby’s “The Funfun Club,” and enjoyed it, so I was willing to take a gander at another of his efforts.
In “Delen Close” we meet Otto Vogel and Benno Schumacher. They have worked together since the 1950’s, then Vogel built up his businesses throughout several countries and Schumacher was his Financial Officer. Now in the 1990’s, greed has begun to erode within Schumacher. And anger swells within Otto Vogel as he learns of how his father died in the Second World War. At this time, one of Delen Close’s executives is murdered in a New York hotel. The investigation lands on the desk of Detective Bill Reardon. Although he is to keep the focus of his investigation in New York, he finds himself traveling to Danbury, Connecticut, where Delen Close is based, on several occasions. He also uses some of his vacation time in Hong Kong, and goes through Bangkok on his way back to New York. He even has to talk with South America before he closes the case. He has learned that more than one executive has been murdered in the past several of years, so he keeps digging.
George Crosby will have you globetrotting with Detective Reardon while solving the murder in New York. As I mentioned, you don’t have to be a WWII history expert or fan to understand or enjoy this mystery. Mr. Crosby puts a human face on individuals that were there and leads you through to the events of today. He very clearly shows the greed that drives man, even to murder. I enjoyed it, but once again, found myself hungry for Chinese food the whole time!
