The protagonist of "Head Games" is a registered nurse, currently holding two jobs - a thrice weekly shift in a trauma center emergency room, and an assistant to the coroner's office as the investigator assigned to be first on the scene when a body is discovered in suspicious circumstances. She suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, a legacy from a tour of duty in a Vietnam War era battlefield hospital.

The problem here is a string of remarkably unlikeable characters, from the protagonist herself, to her police department boss, to her teenaged nephew, to her deceased parents, to her estranged brother, and so on. A single sympathetic, somewhat stereotypical neighbor can't rescue the narrative, and a succession of grisly murder scenes doesn't help matters.
