Martin Edwards
Class/Genre: Mystery Amateur Sleuth
Series: Harry Devlin # 1
1991 (2003 in US), Five Star, 275 pages
This is Martin Edwards’ first novel, which has long been available in England, but never released in the USA until now. It introduces Harry Devlin, a Liverpool solicitor. When he learns one day that his estranged wife has been murdered, just after she has come to see him for the first time in months, Devlin vows to investigate the case and find the killer. The only problem is that he is the number one suspect.
It is strange to read an “old” book such as this one now, as it feels dated in comparison with the increasingly modern and technological thrillers and police procedurals on the market. However, this does not mean that Edwards’ novel is not capable of capturing the reader’s attention and making for a good read. Edwards has chosen Liverpool for the setting, which is interesting, since it is not one of the most common settings for thrillers. His authentic descriptions and details of the city bring it alive.
Harry Devlin, as a simple solicitor struggling to make ends meet, seems an unlikely hero at first, but he gathers strength and resolve as the novel continues. Upon reaching the denouement, the resolution and reasons behind his wife’s killing may seem a little far-fetched, but Edwards succeeds in creating a suitable ending. The rest of the Harry Devlin series is still available and one can imagine that from this strong beginning, Edwards will have increasing his writing skills. An enjoyable debut novel.
