Barry Eisler
Class/Genre: Mystery Thriller
Ballantine Books
In a departure from his ever popular John Rain series, Author Eisler gives readers a stand-alone thriller. Besides being a first rate writer, Eisler has been a covert operative for the CIA, a technology attorney and been an officer of a start up company in Silicon Valley. The main characters in Fault Line, blends his insider knowledge of all three of his previous occupations.
Meet Alex Treven, a Silicon Valley lawyer who's striving to make partner in his firm. He has a client with a sure hit invention for a new encryption application. If it is cleared by the patent examiner, this should be Alex's ticket to partner. And then people close to the application start dying.
Meet Ben Treven, Alex's brother. Because of family issues, the brothers are estranged and have not spoken in seven years. While Alex was busy working his way up the legal ladder, Ben has been serving as an undercover operative used to “find, fix and finish” security issues around the world. But when Alex calls, frantic that he may be the next victim connected to the encryption application, Ben comes home. Unfortunately, the reunion is marred by Ben's mistrust of Alex's partner, Sarah Hosseini.
Unlike many thrillers which depend on the action to propel the reader forward through the book, Eisler uses the three main characters to draw readers farther into the plot's maze. Coming at the problem from three very different backgrounds, Alex, Ben and Sarah are forced to confront some unpleasant issues between them to solve the case. Alex has spent his entire career working inside the legal system, while Ben is used to using whatever means necessary regardless of legalities. While Ben is all about America's security, he has to decide whether or not he can trust Sarah, an Iranian-American. And whenever there are two guys and a girl, isn't there always a bit of romantic tension? Ben is convinced Alex's feelings for Sarah are clouding his judgment.
Readers who like an action packed thriller with political overtones had best cancel their weekend plans when they start reading Fault Line, because they won't put it down until they finish.
