Who would of thought one could have empathy for an assassin? Barry Eisler has made a very human, very thoughtful character in John Rain, a killer for hire. This book, his fourth in the John Rain series, has our protagonist partnering with a colorful character named, Dox, short for Orthodox. The contrast of these two characters added humor and enjoyment in the book. Many references of Rain's past exploits, both in the killing world and in his personal live were made. Past characters, including Dox, reappeared in either major roles or in cameo appearances. One gets the sense Rain is tiring of the killing life and wants to makes some lifestyle changes. He faces barriers to this as he has made enemies from his past kills.

This book portrayed Rain as human, and as someone in his middle years, assessing his life and his decining abilities.

I wonder what the next Rain book will be like. I look forward to it.

6 out of 5 stars.
