Ugo DiFonte, is food taster to the duke, who loves Ugo's daughter, who loves the dukes cook. This unusual piece is set in Renaissance Italy which is vividly portrayed by the author. Court life from the point of view of a food taster is richly painted throughout this book which refuses to be categorized. Its a suspenseful, humorous, romantic tale of love and hate, greed, gluttony, revenge, irony, terror, and joy. Its not quite a mystery, but should appeal to mystery lovers who prefer the cozy end of the genre, (It even has recipes), as well as folks who like historicals with or without a mystery.
