Class/Genre: Mystery Hard Boiled Police Procedural
Series: Detective Chief Inspector Glass
An aging and rather old-fashioned detective chief inspector is investigating the puzzling murder of a harmless elderly actor when one of the girls in the pornographic movies shown at the police Christmas party was identified as the fifteen-year-old god-daughter of one of the officers present. This rather odd coincidence is not emphasized, although it is rather reminiscent of various urban legends. Now Chief Inspector Glass is investigating two cases, and his son-in-law is working on serial murders. The story moves on rapidly, and a number of other twists are added to the plot, all to be neatly sorted out at the end. The 'Internet' of the title comes into play as a tool and means to an end; this novel is not about 'computer crime', but rather about crime committed using computers. The computers function as a tool, and there are really no technicalities to be confused (or fascinated) by.
This is a workmanlike police procedural; moderately intriguing, but without the depth of some other novels in the genre.
