An African-American "club" burns to the ground. Thirteen patrons and one firefighter die in the blaze. Unsatisfied with the 'official' explanation, the local community is outraged by what they consider racism within the fire department and insist on an independent investigation.

Enter Trey Brown (African-American fire chief) and Jamie Estevez (mixed race television reporter) who are appointed to conduct the investigation by a community organization. What they find brings Trey's past to the forefront and entangles it into the investigation itself.

With a brother as a firefighter, the book fascinated me with the details of how a fire is fought and what is involved besides simply pouring water on a blaze. The storyline kept me reading well past my bedtime and far into the night. My only problem with the book was the multiple points of view until I figured it out. Well worth the read, and highly recommended! Since this book is a standalone, now I'm going looking for his Thomas Black series!
