Class/Genre: Mystery Private Investigator
Series: Thomas Black # 1
Random House; 1985
Thomas Black is a retired police officer, private investigator, and landlord to the sometimes-psychic Kathy Birchfield (law student). When Kathy starts having visions of a friend's extreme distress and danger and then finds out her friend has been missing for a week, she badgers Black into working the missing person case on her behalf.
Melissa Nadisky led a strange life, in poverty, married to a poet. But would she voluntarily leave her husband and child? Maybe. Her note hints at her own set of demons from which she is trying to escape. Her husband is weird, but he seems too pathetic to be dangerous. When Melissa's parents virtually kidnap the child, the situation heats up. Then witnesses start dying.
RAINY CITY is the first in Emerson's Thomas Black series. It has all the promise of being a great series. The plot twists are there and Emerson plays fair with the reader. A good way to curl up in front of the fire!
