February in the Northern Midwest is not a cheerful place. It’s usually quite cold, and it often feels worse because of the winds. It’s grey, and everything looks like it needs to be hosed down. I know this because of where I live. And when I read this book I was out there in the elements right along side Amos Walker. Mr. Estleman does such a wonderful job with describing the weather that I read most of the book while under a blanket.

In his sixteenth book with this character Mr. Estleman did a wonderful job of drawing me right in. Amos and I are old friends, and after a few pages it was like we never parted company. The familiar smart ass comments are there, and the outlook on life in general is the same. Which is great because I love the way Amos Walker sees the world through older eyes that don’t think every thing needs to be shiny and new.

The blonde in the book is one Gilia Cristobal, a Latino singer who is taking the music world by storm. She’s flashy, she can really sing and as it turns out she’s a nice person. So why is some one blackmailing her? Enter our ol’ buddy Amos. Amos digs into the back ground of Gilia and those around her and they take him from the jungles of South America, to the warehouse district of Detroit. And he is dealing with college professors, over sized body guards, police , angry mothers, and a paroled gangster with a grudge.

If you haven’t read any of the Amos Walker books before, don’t be afraid to jump on in. There really isn’t any back story you need to know to enjoy the book. It stands on its own just fine. It is however a wonderful addition to the Amos Walker section in the growing library of Estleman books.
