A doctor has discovered a small group of people in Southern Appalachia that have immune systems that reject many diseases including AIDS. An NIH study is underway on the Sujosa. When Faye Longchamps arrives at the settlement in northern Alabama, she finds less than a warm welcome. Locals are suspicious of the research team, and the head, Dr Raleigh seems pompous and inept. Work indeed looks like a challenge.

Faye and her Creek friend Joe try to do a proper job while treading carefully. Soon a fire erupts, and two deaths occur. Menace increases as the settlement seems intent in holding on to its secrets.

Ms. Evans does justice to the setting and characters while answering both the present day mystery and the historical puzzle. A well researched and finely written mystery.
