I really like Nina Zero. She is one of my favorite characters of the last few years. She is real in her feelings and actions and reactions. And the series is definitely a breath of fresh air in the arena of amateur sleuths.
Nina is a photographer, now working for a tabloid paper as paparazzi. She takes celebrity photos and usually when the celebrity in question would rather not have a photo taken. In Burning Garbo she is on the hunt for shots of an elusive and secretive starlet who has hidden herself from the public after a stalker who was after her was killed. So, tabloids doing what they do, Nina needs shots for the ten year anniversary.
Nina’s luck isn’t what you could call great. In fact, it’s lousy. While perched in the hills waiting for her chance to take some pictures a fire starts which eventually burns down the starlets home, with her in it. Naturally the police figure it’s Nina who is behind it. Nina knows better and sets out to prove it. Along the way she is adopted by a Rottweiler with no teeth, meets a whole bunch of cops, some good, some bad, spends more time with her lawyer than she’d like to and makes a few new friends.
Burning Garbo was a terrific read. It moves as fast as Nina’s classic Cadillac. And Robert Evers has a great feel for the city of Los Angles and it’s surrounding counties. I could feel the wind in my hair and the sand between my toes. And I was very surprised to find I didn’t share bruises with the characters.
In short, Nina Zero rocks!!!
