It¹s spring in Reading and DI Jack Spratt of the Nursery Crime Division is working with new Detective Sergeant Mary Mary. They meet at the death site of Humpty Dumpty...below a wall, naturally...and must determine if it is suicide or murder. There is a bit of intrigue going on with Friedland Chymes, another officer determined to trample everyone to climb ever higher on the ladder to success.

This whimsical story does not rely only on nursery characters but includes ordinary mortals, at least one immortal, as well as other sorts. Word play and punny names abound. Still there is a solid mystery to solve and the author keeps the reader guessing until arriving at a surprising solution.

Fforde's sly wit and unbridled imagination make for a fun read. I will be looking forward to the next book.
