Series: Nick Herald Genealogical Mysteries # 1

New Orleans is the setting for this genealogical hunt. Hired by one man to
search the background of a local family, another family member offers Nick
big money to find the same information but to destroy all records. Can a
man serve two masters? The money tempts him to try.

While searching a variety of sources, Nick meets up with a wide cast of characters. Along with his college friends, you will find the rich widow, the beautiful daughter, the hired thugs, the veteran. But the most unusual character is his assistant Hawty, a disabled black woman with attitude. Letıs hope she stays around for future novels. As for Nick, well, I tend to like my protagonists with a strong moral core and he needs some work there. Still, by the end of the tale he does seem to be leaning strongly toward seeing justice done, even if methods might be questionable.

The book managed to keep my interest and even offered up a few surprises. It seemed a bit uneven at times, but as a first effort Iıd rate it a solid three out of five. I would read a second one to see if the characters and the author were showing growth.
