Zoe Greene is a former investigative journalist turned soap opera magazine writer who is totally absorbed in her four month affair with a soap star, Warren Clark. When Warren invites her to vacation at his home in San Esteban, an idyllic Mexican village, she jumps at the chance of this romantic getaway.

Things do not turn out anywhere near as romantic as Zoe imagines they would be in San Esteban. A week before she arrives a tourist is murdered and his heart is ripped out. Upon arrival in San Esteban things immediately start to go wrong. Warren keeps disappearing without explanation, Zoe finds strange black crosses with bleeding hearts in the center in several closets and she hears whispers of a strange cult operating in the village.

As more murder victims are found, Zoe begins to question everyone and everything in the village. Nothing is as idyllic as it should have been. As Zoe finds answers to her questions, every minute puts her life at greater risk.

Alison Gaylin has written a fast paced read that leaves the reader wondering from page to page whether Zoe will survive her vacation in Mexico. I look forward to other mysteries by Alison Gaylin.
