In the newest outing featuring Elizabeth George’s Fab Five (I always include Havers) the lady once again delivers a book guaranteed to satisfy her legion of fans. Lynley and Lady Helen have but brief cameos in a tale that belongs to the St. James. Three cheers from this reader. In my humble opinion they’ve been off stage for far too long.

Deb St. James has just had her first photo collection shown and not to the resounding success she’d hoped for. As Simon tries to offer comfort on a dismal London evening a knock is heard at the door. It’s Cherokee River, the elder brother of Deborah’s dearest American friend. Friend China has been arrested for murder and the St. James are off to Guernsey to get to the bottom of this fine mess. A grand mess it is. Who murdered Guy Bouchard? Where has all his money gone? And what will happen to the museum whose plans are what brought China and Cherokee to England in the first place?

With her commendable talent for presenting information and mulligans to the reader well in hand George throws in an international art conspiracy the sad remnants of a family gutted by the Holocaust and another solidly worked case by our friend Simon St. John. There are, as always, great personal stories. The St. James marriage has always been precarious with its many secrets and phobias. This case has the two St. James going in different directions and offering little trust to one another may well be their undoing. I had a wonderful time with A PLACE OF HIDING and hope that you do too.
