All Gerard Pasquale wants to do is solitary recover from his recent troubles. Instead, his avaricious attorney Percy Cristobel informs him that he researched his client’s records that prove Gerard is a four-century old vampire. Percy warns Gerard that he has the proof ready to go to the newspapers if the bloodsucker fails to acquiesce to his wishes. Percy demands that Gerard marry his step-sister Laure and provide the Cristobel family with a large portion of the vampire’s wealth. Realizing he is too weak to escape New Orleans and eliminate his foe, an irate Gerard agrees to the terms.

Playing a virtuosos performance on his sibling’s heartstrings, Percy persuades a reluctant Laure to wed the stranger. After they marry, Gerard immediately treats his wife with scorn. She continues to bravely try to make a marriage with the monster, but he refuses her efforts. In spite of his disdain for his "greedy" wife, Gerard begins to admire her courage and starts to fall in love with the mortal. Laure already loves her spouse. Can a human and an immortal find happiness while her step-brother plays his own game to gain more wealth.

After a five year gap that feels more like a lifetime, Nancy Gideon writes the fourth installment in her "Midnight" series. The story line is crisp, feral, yet tender as only Ms. Gideon can do with a supernatural romance. Gerard and Laure are a charming pair whom a sympathetic audience will want them to find happiness. Percy is the vile villain whose odious behavior leaves readers wondering why Laure appears so naive with him yet so innocent and worldly with Gerard. Sub-genre fans will cheer the return of Gerard.
