Series: Peter McGarr # 17
2003, William Morrow, 294 pages
The last chapter of a writer’s work carries with it a burden often difficult to live up to. I opened Bartholomew Gill’s DEATH IN DUBLIN knowing I’d never again get to read a new work by the man. And what a place in his series featuring Peter McGarr he was starting from. At the end of the last chapter, a little tome titled DEATH OF AN IRISH SINNER a twist to this long established series left McGarr’s personal life in turmoil and the professional lives of subordinates Hugh and Ruthie in question.. DEATH IN DUBLIN picks up as our favorite Irish police are picking up the pieces. McGarr still numb and Hugh and Ruthie establishing themselves in a new business. The Case The book of Kells has been stolen. Who are the culprits? Religious fanatics? Political agitators? Or a nemisis somewhat closer to home?
One last time Gill spins an intelligent and multi-layered tale of subterfuge with the skill of a master craftsman and shares it with us. One last time we look into his Dublin and absorb a new tale. Disappointments? Not a one. And the solace when you’re done is that you can go back and open the collection of books again and again. Such is the beauty of literature.
You will be missed Mr. Gill but read forever.
