Normally I don’t think of poetry professors as exciting, and I certainly wouldn’t think of them when I list professions for a protagonist to have in my crime reading. Well, Victor Gischler has managed to make me rethink my thinking and makes his prof. a very exciting guy to read about. As we follow Jay Morgan through his teaching at a Oklahoma University we find ourselves wrapped up in a story of drug dealers, mob guys, gang bangers, faculty in fighting, bad poems, dead bodies and strip clubs. Oh yeah, and a road trip. Because no book involving college can be complete with out a road trip.

Morgan gets swept up by events happening to him and around him, starting with a dead coed in his bed, and being a fly on the wall while it is happening is a pure pleasure. Fast paced filled with zany characters Gischler has created a story that I just didn’t want to see end. There is a sensibility to the writing that just makes these people seem very real. Humanity in bad situations doing stupid things. And there is such a wonderful flow to his story telling that reading is effortless.

He is a true prince of the modern noir royalty. Put on a seat belt, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!
