Victor Gischler
Class/Genre:   Mystery   Noir

A crazy quilt of a story - filled with characters straight from some demented version of an old silent movie - with unscrupulous private eyes, gangsters from St Louis, a rural entrepreneur in the field of illegal substances, and assorted flunkies and hangers-on all careening through eastern Oklahoma in search of a gym bag full of cocaine.

Along the way quite a few dead bodies result from the action. A luxurious automobile gets submerged in the Gulf of Mexico, a reclusive poet hides in an abandoned school building, a hapless visiting professor manages to stumble into the middle of one bad scene after another, and one of the most interesting characters of contemporary suspense fiction shows up at just the right time. Fred Jones is an aspiring poet, and coincidentally a client of a Federal witness protection program. Driven by a deep desire to have his poems see the light of day, in Gischler's hands Jones becomes the center pole on which all events converge.

A fast, hilarious, enjoyable read!
