Macmillan, 2000, £16.99 , pp. 499
In Glass' previous novel, 'Eyes', he introduced the character of Dr. Susan Shader. She returns in the sequel, attempting to track down a serial killer who pours other people's blood into his victims. However, another killer is also free and looking for revenge.
'Blood' boasts one of the most complex plots that I have read in a long, long time. It changes and develops throughout the novel before arriving in an interesting conclusion that puts the future of the main character in doubt. In conjunction with the complexity of the plot, a lot of the vocabulary employed here is technical and perhaps more advanced than the average reader would know.
When I read 'Eyes', I noted that Glass concentrated mainly on Susan herself and her relationship with the rest of the world. For this novel, it changes totally and is much more plot-driven than character-driven. This is not a bad thing since it makes an interesting, intricate thriller.
One thing that could put readers off this novel is that it is rather gruesome. Glass goes into detail regarding wounds, methodology and many different forms of sexual deviancy, never shying away from an opportunity to point out the insanity of the killer. However, if you are a fan of dark thrillers, then 'Blood' will be for you. For cozy fans, steer well clear.
