Dutton, Nov 1998, $22.95, 336 pp.
The National Security Council adds Los Angeles Memorial Hospital forensic pathologist Dr. Joanna Blalock to their research team investigating deadly bacteria found in an ice-bound asteroid that crashed on the planet sixty-five million years ago. Joanna quickly flies to Alaska to join the scientists on board the research ship, Global Explorer II. Her initial excitement about joining the Extraterrestrial Toxic Agent Team is tempered when she realizes how fraught the team is with petty jealousies and nasty competition.
However, even her tempered outlook turns ugly when team members start dying. Soon Joanna has a new mystery to work on besides that of the toxin as she tries to uncover the identity of a murderer, who may be as deadly as the extraterrestrial bacteria under study.
The latest Blalock mystery is a refreshing medical thriller that moves the fabulous sleuth to a new locale while retaining Joanna's essence as developed in the previous thrillers. The story line is fast-paced and realistic, while the motivations of the characters propel the plot forward. Anyone who reads a Leonard Goldberg medical thriller knows they are perusing the best the sub-genre has to offer.
