Arthur Hackett, radio station manager, has refurbished the old Cable Car Building in Kansas City where the building not only houses the radio station but also has other tenants including Dr. Gina Davenport, nationally syndicated psychiatrist. When Dr. Gina Davenport falls to her death from the eighth floor of this building the police immediately suspect Jordon Hackett, troubled daughter of Arthur and Carol Hackett.
Lou Mason is hired to defend Jordan who now at the age of twenty-one lives at Sanctuary, a center for troubled youth, run by Centurion Johnson, an ex-con and now a community leader. Although Jordon confesses to the murder, Mason questions her story and runs into trouble in trying to check out the many discrepancies. Jordon’s brother, the manager of the Cable Car Building becomes a suspect in Mason’s mind when Jordon confesses that her brother forced her to have sex with him but that her parents refused to believe her.
Lou runs into many obstacles in his search for the truth but along the way falls in love with a woman who thinks she is Jordan’s biological mother. The story takes many twists and turns and discovers a black market adoption ring. Goldman keeps the reader guessing and this Goldman book seems to be better than the last. I look forward to reading more mysteries set in Kansas City.
