This is the second in Ms. Gordon's Sunny McCoskey Napa Valley Mystery series. While "Death by the Glass" is part of a series, it can be thoroughly enjoyed without having read "Sharpshooter," the series opener (although having now discovered Sunny McCoskey, I definitely *will* be going back to read it). The characters in the book are well developed, and Sunny McCoskey is a very likeable protagonist who is the owner and chef of a small restaurant in Napa Valley. Sunny is a tenacious woman and loyal friend who is quite self-assured when it comes to her skills as a chef. When it comes to romance, however, Sunny's self-assurance melts away. Her romantic exploits, however, are integral to the storyline and also help take some of the edge off her very stubborn character.

The book gets down to business quite quickly, and Sunny finds herself at the periphery of an investigation into the death of another restaurateur. Despite the finding of death due to heart attack, Sunny doggedly pursues the notion that the man was actually murdered. If indeed a murder had been committed, there is a paucity of evidence to support Sunny's suspicion but there *is* an abundance of ready suspects. Many of the characters have something to hide, so the plot goes through several twists and turns, keeping the reader guessing and making it nearly impossible to put the book down. I liked the fact that I didn't have any of it figured out until nearly the end. Now, that's *my* kind of mystery novel! I will definitely be looking forward to more from author Nadia Gordon.
