She’s honest when she feels like being sincere. She’s tough whenever she needs to be strong. However, she’s also fair when it calls for being just. Two divorces mean nothing to private detective Kinsey Milhone until her past returns to haunt her.
A man informs Kinsey that he possesses some personal items that belong to her, which he bought in a storage auction. The ever-curious Kinsey learns that the locker once belonged to her first husband Mickey Magruder. Fifteen years ago, she left Mickey when he asked her to provide him with an alibi while being a prime suspect in manslaughter case. In the package, she finds a letter that casts sufficient doubt on Mickey’s guilt. Feeling ashamed for letting him down, Kinsey searches for Mickey, but fails to locate him.
Thus, she is shocked when two police officers visit her to inform her that Mickey lies in intensive care from a gunshot fired from a weapon registered to Kinsey. His phone records prove he talked with someone at Kinsey’s home. Obviously, the police suspect Kinsey shot her former spouse. To prove both she and Mickey are innocent of any crimes, Kinsey investigates both incidents. However, her inquiry places her life becomes in jeopardy from an unknown assailant who needs the past to remain buried.
As usual Sue Grafton provides her myriad of fans with a first class entertaining tale starring a legendary private detective. Kinsey remains her hard boiled, controversial, and vulnerable self which makes her such an appealing character. Fans will enjoy the story line of O IS FOR OUTLAW which provides a wonderful who-done-it and insight into Kinsey’s past. Alphabet Sue shows she still knows her ABCs when it comes to providing a pleasurable reading experience.
