How good is Robert Greer? HEAT SHOCK is a departure from his CJ Floyd series and I wasn’t disappointed. This book introduces two engaging new characters. Dr. Carmen Nguyen is half Vietnamese and half black, at this point half American doctor and half My Lai survivor. She lives in Colorado with her only family, an aunt who also came to America. She relaxes tending to and riding her vintage motorcycle. Her life is about to become action packed. Our second lead is Walter Rios. Ex military and now a river rafter, he has his own demons to face.

The two individuals are brought together in Nguyen’s E.R. by a retired miner. He needs someone to look after his prize cock-fighters. Someone is trying to steal them from the old man and they are his pride and joy. Why steal chickens? It’s here that Greer hooks us with a plot about pharmaceutical research, human genetics and crazy paramilitary that Robin Cook wishes he had come up with first. It’s a medical/military thriller full of suspense and action and with characters I’m hoping Mr. Greer will return to.
