Aud Torvington, a former police officer, loves the adrenaline rush provided by a life-threatening situation. Everything changes for the bored Norwegian when she is out walking the streets of Atlanta late one evening. She runs into art broker Julia Lyons-Bennett, who’s fleeing from the home of Jim Lusk, an art appraiser, when an explosion rocks the house.
Though she cannot believe that she was the intended victim, Julia hires Aud to investigate what happened. Aud is elated because the case is wrought with danger, taking her to that special BLUE PLACE where she feels alive. Aud accompanies Julia to Oslo where the two women begin to fall in love with each other, an alien emotion for the former undercover cop. However, danger still lurks for Julia, leaving it up to Aud to save her love.
THE BLUE PLACE is an interesting mystery novel due to its fine protagonist. Aud is a refreshing character, who seems to represent much of the attitudes of many Gen Xers, who seem to seek crump at any cost. Julia adds depth to the story line by bringing out the emotional side of Aud. The story line is filled with non-stop action that demonstrates why Nicola Griffith has won several awards for her science fiction novels.
