Top Publications, Ltd.; 2004; 231 pages
Zeke Armstrong is back for another fast-paced adventure. This time he’s in New York for an in-line skate race. Even better, his parents are coming to a medical conference and Uncle Dane will be catching up with them, too. For now, Zeke is staying with the Gao family, who are there for the same conference that the Armstrongs are going to attend. Zeke and his friend Pow Wow Gao witness an attack in the park that the police consider a mugging, but Zeke knows there is more to it. At first, the adults all think he’s just over-imaginative. When will they ever learn? To get out of danger, Zeke has to think fast and furiously, and to stop the bad guys, he has to overcome his worse fear.
The authors have introduced us to interesting people. Pow Wow Gao is fast becoming by favorite sidekick character; he is almost as talented as Zeke, and just as full of surprises! Mrs. Gao is no slouch, either. She has a dry humor and is definitely people-savvy. Mr. Gao, however, seems to be the brainy type who can’t remember which pocket he put the soap in when showering! I really like this family, and hope they show up regularly in the series.
Why anyone felt that giving this series a limitation such as “for ages 9 to 12,” I will never know. These books (Red Card, Green Streak, and the upcoming White Out) are for teens and adults who like action and mystery. I can’t wait to share them!
