Series: Zeke Armstrong # 2
Zeke Armstrong goes to New York for the Big Apple Inline Skate-Off. While at the race, he takes a wrong turn and has to push his exteme (ly boring) inline skating skills to the limit. Some people might find this book exciting, but I do not. Even though many people inline skate, I don’t think they actually get into adventures of fighting evil people who steal things.
Even though the characters are pretty real, there is still the “Super-Kid who goes around using his skating skills to fight bad people” aspect of this book. Also, there are lots of convenient things in this book, like the fact that Zeke is trilingual.
Even though the main idea of the story is boring, there is still good that shines through the muck. I personally liked how all the clues where found (even though after the first few, the plot seems obvious), but disliked how Zeke was always having to use his skates at unreal speeds. How can a 13-year-old go over 45mph for several minutes straight? On top of that, how can a 13-year-old do that five to six times in two days?
Even though this book seems geared for 7th graders, I would recommend it to definitely be in an Elementary school library. I think that there is lots of fun for the younger reader. This isn't a very challenging read, which makes it good for Elementary-Schoolers, but kind of tedious and repetitive for anyone above Elementary age. I personally dislike it, but I am sure others would disagree with me. On the plus side, there is a bunch of good thinking going on.
Even though the end is pulled out of the blue, it is still a great piece of work. Overall, I would recommend this book, just not to Middle Schoolers, but to Elementary Schoolers, especially ones who like the Kid Detective type books.
