In West Texas Louisa Daniel and daughter Emily have arrived from California to settle the estate of an elderly aunt. Aunt Atie was one of nine sisters, 3 nasty, 3 nice, and the others somewhere in between. They are met by Mel, the Œsuper bitch womanš aunt who has established herself in Atiešs house to hold off looting by other relatives. Little does Mel know that the will disinherits her.

As Louise works through piles of papers to sort out Atiešs complicated affairs, Emily tries to find an old college roommate who moved to Texas but disappeared about ten years earlier. The locals are alternately welcoming and hostile. Worse, the sheriff seems to be stalking them, and finally locks them in jail without any contact with others. What have these outsiders got themselves into?

The history, geography and social mores of rural Texas are well done. Descriptive passages move the reader right into the West Texas landscape, and characters are interesting and well defined. The story starts slowly, and there are moments when you must suspend disbelief, but stay with it. You will enjoy the ride.
