Every book in this series is more delicious that the one before. Depite the dark ovetones to the stories because they are set in a time and place where slavery is acceptable, the books are richly detailed, the storylines complex and fascinating and the characters strongly portrayed. The protagonist is Benjamin January, a former slave who studied in medicine in France but returned to New Orleans where he makes his living as a musician. In this tale, his sister Olympe, a powerful voodoo practitioner has been accused of murder. As Benjamin tries to find the guilty party, and prove her innocent the author takes us into the world of voodoo in the bayous outside New Orleans, to the great houses, from the slave world to the class of society in a very complex tale that I really enjoyed.
