Steve Hamilton
Class/Genre: Mystery Private Investigator Police Procedural
Series: Alex McKnight # 6
Alex McKnight is in love. The popular protagonist of Hamilton's continuing series met Natalie Reynaud when McKnight was involved in a series of murders in an Ontario wilderness and Reynaud was one of the investigating officers.
McKnight rather goofily responds to his new feelings with diets including lots of salad, and a hair rinse designed to provide a subtle change in appearance but which leads to a continuing joke as the other characters in the series encounter McKnight's new look for the first time.
When Reynaud and McKnight meet in an Ontario hotel during a brutal winter storm, their tryst is interrupted by a mysterious item deposited at their hotel room door. As they attempt to follow the elderly man who placed it there, the storm holds them back. In the morning comes the grim news that the man has been found dead, the apparent victim of exposure.
The two begin to follow the trail of the elderly man, attempting to interview his family and others who might have seen him leave the hotel. Each attempt brings more hostility, more danger, and more death. Eventually long buried secrets of a long standing feud are revealed.
As with other books in this series, Mother Nature as she reveals herself in Upper Michigan and Southern Ontario is an important character in all the events.
