Thomas Dunne for St. Martin’s Minotaur; May 2002

The fourth book by Hamilton featuring Alex McKnight, his reluctant protagonist is simply put, a great book. It grabbed me from the first page and kept me going right till the end. Every time I thought I had everything figured out, BAM, another twist. Steve Hamilton has quickly become one of my favorite authors, and I can’t decide what I like best, the easy going yet no-nonsense character he’s created, or the beautiful way he writes about the upper peninsula of Michigan.

In this book Alex’s freind Jackie is worried that Alex is becoming too much of a hermit. So Jackie talks him into going to a poker game at the house of a rich, show off, ex-contractor named Vargas. The game is interrupted by masked gunmen who want what’s in the safe upstairs. Through a strange turn of events, Alex’s buddy Jackie, along with Gill and Bennett, end up arrested for the crime. And once again our favorite reluctant PI is on the case, even after giving it up in the last book. Alex chases lead after lead, but things don’t seem to add up. By the end of the book, I could not read fast enough! The ending is wonderful and well thought out.

If you haven’t read Hamilton’s books yet, what are you waiting for??? If you have, you'll love this new book.
