Reporter Eve Diamond is on her own in the LA Times newsroom
on a slow Saturday when Vincent Chevalier bursts in looking for help.
His 15 year old daughter Isabel has gone missing. Rich, wanting for
nothing, but bored and rebellious, she has taken to hanging out in
squats. Chevalier thinks he knows where she is, but needs a witness to
help him get her back. Since the police won't help, he goes to the
Press. When they find a body at the squat Eve is hooked on both a
personal and professional basis. Eve Diamond is a great character -
smart and independent but far from perfect; the main reason I like her
is that she cares so much. This is a really excellent book that, like
THE JASMINE TRADE, uncovers stories and cultures of LA life that are
fascinating. Stories which manage to be both familiar and exotic at the
same time. Denise Hamilton's descriptions of LA and her use of language
are superb and the lives of her characters are told with warmth and
heart despite the violence and sadness. Excellent stuff.
