Seventeen year old Marina Lu has been shot in her new Lexus, in the car park of a shopping centre where she was going to pay for the bridesmaids dresses for her forthcoming wedding. The police think it's a carjacking gone wrong - Marina's cash and expensive engagement ring are untouched. Journalist Eve Diamond is not so sure. Her investigations lead her into unfamiliar territory - gangs, secrecy, pride, and the sad world of the 'parachute kids' - children whose rich parents feel there is more for them in the US than in China, so send them over with nobody for company except a maid and bucketfulls of money. This was an absolutely fascinating read which had me thinking long after I'd finished the book. In addition, I REALLY liked Eve. She's a very real person - smart and strong, yet also impulsive and vulnerable.
