Meg Harris has moved from the a life in the large cities of Eastern Canada to a small lakeshore community in the forests of Quebec. Living in a house she has inherited from a favorite aunt, Meg is learning to value a slower pace of life and a stronger connection to the natural world which surrounds her home.

Her serenity is challenged when representatives of a large corporation arrive in the area, with noisy boats, planes, dredging and mining equipment, and officious men in hard hats - with announced plans to begin mining for gold on a nearby island. Members of the Migiskan nation native to the area are divided in support of the plans, and Meg joins those who oppose the mining company. As events unfold, it becomes clear that the only way to prevent the intrusion is to contact the owner of the island - and as she begins to follow the murky trail of legal documents Meg begins to realize that she has a strong personal stake in the future of the pristine area.

Selfish responses to the hope of untold riches lead some residents of the area to violence, and at least one person very dear to Meg is found murdered.

Harlick presents a wealth of information about the forested areas of Quebec, and the history and traditions of persons native to the area.
