It was the virus in the tomatoes that decimated much of the human race, which led in turn to the Inlanders (the supernatural races) being outed. Now they co-exist with humans and like the mortals, some are good and others are very bad. Rachel, a witch, is one of the supernatural entities that try to do what is right even if she has demons marks from working with them and her souls is black scum. If she dies before it is removed, she will go straight to the place where the demons live.

One morning the powerful demon Newt tries to possess her because he wants something she has. His keeper Minias comes to take him home but he needs Rachel’s help. She gives it in return for him wearing her mark which means he has to do a favor for her when she asks for it. The FIB needs her help with the death of three werewolf women. Vampires and weres want the focus, a statue that changes humans into weres. Rachel has it but has no intention of giving it to either side because it would change the balance of power and alter civilization. The master vampire of the city is gunning for her as it was her testimony that put him in jail. When the demon Al flees to earth, he has a score to settle with Rachel and makes a deal with the elf Trent, a criminal mastermind. If she isn’t careful, Rachel could be killed by any one of these beings or the two wolf packs who want the statue.

Kim Harrison is one of the best writers of supernatural fantasy with great action-scenes and a fascinating heroine that has a heart of gold an even if her soul is a little dirty because she was forced to deal with demons. The support cast especially Ivy the living vampire, Junx the pixy, and Ceri the elf, add an extra dimension to the storyline as they watch Rachel’s back and love her in spite of her stubborn nature.
