Donald Harstad is a twenty six year sheriff's department veteran. This experience shows through in his writing, in his earlier books and now again in his Latest, Code Sixty One. Set in Iowa, Deputy Sheriff Carl Houseman and his partner Hester Gorse track down the killer of a young woman who appears to have been killed by a , well, by a vampire. Along the way he encounters a vampire cult and an honest to goodness vampire hunter all in his quest to find the elusive Dan Peal, who may or may not be a vampire. Either way, he needs to be found.

Harstad has wonderful pacing through out the book, and writes a very gripping story. It’s one of those books that demands to finished quickly. A great read.
