Nestled in the woods of southeast Wisconsin, the small town of Lake Geneva was a luxurious hideaway for the wealthy families who built the city of Chicago. Gracious homes lined the lakeside, mail and supplies were delivered by boat, tall trees provided shade and privacy for summer getaway weekends and sumptuous entertaining.

As is the case everywhere, all this luxury needed manpower to sustain it, so the town of Lake Geneva was populated by solid middle class families who provided the supporting economy and the manpower for servants, gardeners, cooks, caterers and mechanics.

Ellie Forman is an outsider to both sides of the economic spectrum of Lake Geneva, working there to produce a corporate video which is intended as a marketing tool for a newly remodeled resort. Ellie lives in the suburbs of Chicago's North Shore, and on her way home one evening she is an eyewitness to a terrifying drive by shooting in which a young woman is gunned down.

Ellie discovers that the dead woman was a resident of Lake Geneva, and as she continues work on the video production job she learns more and more about both sides of the strictly divided Lake Geneva society.

Hellman has a cast of believable characters - and a plot which provides opportunity to consider what makes a happy family. Not surprisingly, money won't do it - but affection, open communication, and a willingness to admit mistakes just might.
