Another delightful book from Hillerman.
Navaho Tribal Police find a stranded pickup truck, and a dead man in the front seat. From a small container of sand found nearby, they suspect that the dead man is involved with a search for a lost gold mine long rumoured to be located somewhere on the reservation. An officer searches for a likely spot, based on various burr-type seeds located on the dead man's clothing, and locates what may be the site of the mine.
But other evidence leads them to a man who murdered another in self defense five years earlier, in an argument arising over the same mine. He has served an abbreviated prison sentence, but in the intervening years his young wife has disappeared. He approaches Joe Leaphorn, now retired, to search for her.
Leaphorn and Jim Chee rely, as usual, on the time honored traditions of the Navaho, as Hillerman provides another entry in his long list of enjoyable reads.
