In 1760 Yorkshire England, Lady Georgina Maitland is an unusual woman. Spunky, unmarried in her late 20¹s and owner of her own lands, she manages them without help of brother or other protector. And she does have brothers, three of them sandwiched between herself as oldest and a much younger sister Violet.

Lady Georgina has hired Harry Pye as land steward, unaware that he was raised on the adjoining Granville estate or that great hatred exists between Harry and Lord Granville. This makes it easy for Granville, also the magistrate, to believe Harry is responsible for the poisoned sheep found in the area. As interest ignites between Lady Georgina and Harry, his life is threatened by the discovery of a woman murdered in the same fashion as the sheep. Everyone is sure Harry has done it and Granville is determined to prosecute. Sexual tension abounds, and before long real passion. Can Harry and his lady ignore the difference in their stations?

With strong attractive characters, villainous villains, a great, if muddy, English countryside and a taut story, Elizabeth Hoyt has written a winner.
