Armed with a blonde wig and her friend Roberta’s beautiful antique necklace, Haley Parsons boards the American Orient Express hoping for romance and intrigue but willing to settle for the scenery and the knowledge she will bring home to her students in her history class in Denver.
Haley signed up to take the trip during her spring break. Her purpose was simply to get away and enjoy the change of scenery. Her friend Roberta has other ideas and convinces her that blondes really do have more fun so Haley promises to wear the blonde wig and use the make-up Roberta has insisted she buy.
Her first night in New Orleans she winds up having dinner with a fellow passenger who is a very handsome man and seemingly interested in all the old movies and things of the past that interest Haley.
Once she boards the train she finds that he isn’t a corporate executive as she assumed but the activities director for the American Orient Express. It isn’t long before she discovers that activities director is not even his true identity. When jewelry starts disappearing then Haley really begins to get suspicious of everyone and winds up in a pretty desperate situation herself.
North by Northeast is a fast read and enjoyable. You will wish the American Orient Express were a part of your future vacation plans.
