The Dark Wing' is a fast-paced novel of the space opera type. It should appeal to readers who enjoy adventures and military heroics in a futuristic settings. The novel is set in a far-distant future in which humanity has colonized distant worlds. The human worlds are ruled by an emperor, a constitutional monarch heavily influenced by a powerful and wealthy class, and whose servants include a very powerful and mysterious secret service. Perhaps fortunately, the book does not focus on the politics of this imagined empire, although various representatives of the power elites do their best to influence the main actors in the story.
The story is one of racial conflict, because the Solar Empire is not alone. It has been fighting a series of wars, interspersed with periods of piece. Or, as some believe, a single war, pausing only when the enemy, the bird-like zor, want time to regroup. True peace does not seem possible. Following the latest attack, a retired admiral who has written a famous book on the zor, gains full command of the fleet, and revolutionizes the human approach to the war. The subsequent developments among the humans, zor, and mysterious enemies provide an intriguing conclusion to the book, and supply hints of interesting developments in the sequel, "The Dark Path".
