My old programming was filled with negative energy. Among the faulty source code of my programming was the thinking that I need to sleep at night instead of finishing books. Well no more! Thanks to my new program I was able to empower myself to go without sleep and give myself fully to THE PROGRAM. With this book I was able to maximize my reading potential, and it helped to tune out the negative energy of the outside world.
Tim Rackley first appeared last year in THE KILL CLAUSE. Tim was a Federal Marshall deputy until events (as seen in KILL CLAUSE) led to his leaving the department. He is now working a job in security, which given Tim’s skills, is a real step down. He and his wife Dray, a sheriff’s deputy, are still getting over the lose of their daughter. This might be part of the reason why he decides to take on a case of a missing girl. The fact that it may lead to being a Marshall’s Deputy again doesn’t hurt.
The missing girl is a college student named Leah. And it appears that she has joined a cult. Which means this is going to be more than a matter of tracking down her whereabouts. Even if Tim tracks her down, due to the nature of cults, there’s a good chance she won’t want to come home. So Tim, back with the department on a temp basis goes undercover….
Hurwitz opens this book with a pretty shocking scene at the Le Brea tarpits and leaves the reader intrigued, but not giving time to think about it too much as he proceeds to bring us up to date with the Rackleys. As the story unfolds the pacing starts to quicken, and any thoughts of putting this book down for any reason are gone. It demands to be read as fast as possible. It was like being on skis being pulled by a motorboat going way too fast. And Gregg Hurwitz is a guy who does his homework. There are no clichéd cult scenes here, you would swear that Hurwitz has experienced this stuff first hand. Just reading about in this book creeped me out, there’s no way could I imagine living it. Hurwitz id like a highly trained chef, mixing the right amount of the perfect ingredients resulting in a feast that will leave readers satisfied and yet craving more.
I know a little about Gregg’s background, and I know he could do anything or be whatever he wants to be. I’m glad he’s decided to be an author.
