Bantam, Nov 1999, $5.99, 336 pp.
Alex Plumtree, a rabid bibliophile, owns Plumtree Publishing. He becomes ecstatic when he finds a copy of an untitled fifteenth century book hidden inside a secret panel of his bookcase. Using the Incunable work of the era, the story tells how one of his guards murdered Richard the Lionhearted while the monarch was sleeping. As Alex attains authentication, several attempts to steal the book occur. Alex also receives an exorbitant offer of money to buy the book.
The exclusive Foxburge Club offers Alex a membership. He quickly accepts. However, before he can attend the club's annual meeting, someone steals Alex’s priceless book. He goes ahead to the club meeting where he finds all sorts of gyrations including murder by various members trying to gain possession of the book.
Julie Kaewert writes another enjoyable and complex “Booklover’s Mystery” starring an honorable person who tries to do the right thing although it leads to danger. There are many villains in this story leaving readers to ponder the identity of the killer. UNTITLED is a thought provoking British amateur sleuth novel that will please sub-genre fans.
