Jackie Flowers is a defense attorney in Denver, Colorado. Jackie reluctantly accepts a case to defend Rachel Boyd, a young woman fresh out of prison. Rachel Boyd was found guilty of killing a child Freddie Gant while only a child herself. She served her time in reform school and adult prison and is now free and living with her brother Chris. But now another child has been killed. A child that had been left in the care of Rachel Boyd by the child’s father and Rachel’s brother Chris.

Jackie manages to get Rachel out on bail and agrees to let Rachel stay with her while awaiting trial. Although Rachel refuses to discuss the past the prosecuting attorney is determined to bring up the Freddie Gant murder. Then Lee Simms a reporter that had been following the earlier crime turns up in town. He hints at information he has that can help Jackie with the case but Jackie is slow to trust him.

This is an interesting story that comes to a dramatic conclusion and I did enjoy reading the book. The problem that I have with Flowers background is that she suffers from dyslexia and has never received any help for the problem. At least if she did it is not stated in the book. How a person with dyslexia can fake her way through school, college and the bar exam is something I really can’t understand or believe.
