Laurie King has written a book for another fascinating protagonist. The author who’s brought us Mary Russell and Kate Martinelli introduces former soldier Allen Charmichael in her new work KEEPING WATCH.Charmichael is a man estranged from his family and haunted by Vietnam.
Released from the army 30 years ago 25 years ago he stumbled upon his life’s work; rescuing children from abusive parents. Age has caught up with him though and he knows it’s time to stop. One last case calls to him. A boy named Jamie....
As King sends her reader to terrifying places where no child is safe and the adults may be in even more trouble she elevates this tale from the standard thriller with astounding characters. Backgrounds of and interaction between the characters are written with an astuteness and talent you have to admire. The story unfolds until both Charmichael and his readers are equally chagrined that he didn’t see the signs. For this last case has a hidden threat he hasn’t faced before and he must go for help..... Can he?
Another engrossing tale from a lady who’s been by my bedside for over a decade now.
